Sonora Hunting Trip Gear List

This is a brief but very helpful gear list for anyone having a trip booked in Sonora Mexico. Each hunt is different and every environment is too, it's good to know what a local outfitter suggests you bring when planning your trip to Sonora. I hope this list helps you organize your hunting trip to Sonora.

Contrary to what most people think or say, more is not always better. Sonora encounters with mule deer or coues deer are close! Most of the time 100 yards or less, having a 10x42 binoculars is an excellent option for these distances. They are normally smaller-sized binos and sometimes cheaper versions of higher not needed glasses.

Backpacks & Gear

Backpacks & Gear cover

Most of the time while hunting in Sonora you will be driving around a high rack, unlike other countries, Sonora is about covering land! Having said that, you will try to high rack the most, some glassing from high spots and walking through some deer trail areas or feeders, hunting packs are not a super deal unless you are sheep hunting, which is what I am recommending the following for:

Gear - Accessories

The only gear needed will be communication-wise if limited on reception service in the ranch which is not very common. If that's the case in reach or some satellite messaging devices work well.

Calls

Your guide will usually have a deer call with him but it's good to bring your own.

Scent Eliminators

Scent eliminators are nice to have when hunting on a blind but usually you will be driving in a high rack.

Camping Equipment

Tent

I would recommend bringing the smaller and lighter tent when sheep hunting, any 1-person tent would be good, try to find something with an easy installation. Tents are not needed for mule deer or coues deer hunting as most of the time you will be driving back to camp.

Sleeping Bags & Pads

I like light sleeping bags for Sonora, although it gets pretty chilly sometimes, having a sleeping pad its optional but its always good for your back, specially when spike camping for several nights on a sheep hunt.

Food & Nutrition

Food & Nutrition cover

All Mexican hunts will include a cook at camp, which means you will always come back for lunch and dinner when deer hunting. That's not the case when sheep hunting, so bringing snacks, bars or food is a must when spike camping. Choose something easy to prepare and that you like.

Clothing

Clothing cover

There's a golden rule for clothing when hunting in Sonora: Bring clothing with layers! It's chilly in the mornings and nights but warm or hot at midday, bringing clothes that you are able to put on and remove during the day is key for the best comfort. The brand is not important to me, just find what works best for you!
