Optics are very important for this hunt. Generally the key is to spot the rutting bucks and then make a play based on wind and behaviour. I have had more success targeting lone bucks. As it can be difficult to pull bucks away from does.
My pack is one of my most important pieces of equipment. I carry all my gear on me at all times when I head out for a hunt. Weather it is riding with me in the truck or on my back all me gear is in it and it's ready to go. I use a day pack for this hunt as usually I am driving from spot to spot glassing for animals and then making stalks from there. Once I spot my target animal then I grab my pack and off I go.
One of the most useful spot and stalk pieces of equipment is a good decoy. This will drastically help your success. You want a decoy that is quick to deploy and can easily be staked in the ground to make a shot. I have made my own out of plywood in the past and these have worked well. There are a couple on the market that work well also.
Pack your regular camping gear that you would normally use. Stay in a nearby campsite and then drive to your hunting area. This hunt is all about covering large amounts of ground with the truck until your find some animals. Then the stalk is on.
This is a high output hunt with lots of walking in potentially warm conditions. The most important nutrition to focus on is hydration. Since you are truck/trailer camping you can plan whatever meals fit your fancy. During the day it is important to pack lots of water, electrolytes and some energy bars. That's what keeps me walking and stalking.
Clothing is very important for this hunt as is for most hunts. I pack a layering system that allows me to shed layers fast as I warm up while walking. I also have light clothing that protects me from sun and wind while allowing me to move fast. Pant vents are your friend, I wish all clothing brands would realize this. Also make sure to have some sort of white accent on your upper half. This could be a white buff, white shirt, white hat, or flip your base layer inside out. Most of my base layers are whitish on the inside. Antelope are attracted to white during the rut. Also knee pads are an absolute must for stalking through the cactus.
Any clothing accessory I use is tailored either to protecting me from the Sun or protecting me from the cactus/brush. Is may be barren but in can beat you and your clothing up in a hurry. Knee pads, gaiters, and gloves. Get them and wear them. You will thank me.
This is a compound bow hunt. Be ready to shoot fast and long distances. They will give you a little time but you need to range fast and shoot fast. On top of everything these are some small critters. Practise a bunch before you head out. And know your ranges.
