My first year guiding, I had a $300 set of 8x42 Leopold binos, and that was it. I quickly realized I needed quality glass. I researched as best I could, and came up with Maven Optics as a brand I could trust, and afford. Quality glass, and customizable!!!
Being a boat guide, I don't have to rely on gear that is ultra light. My main pack is the Kuiu Pro system, as it allows me to have a great fit, with different bag size options. I run an Alps frame pack to haul moose quarters with the solid meat shelf.
I have a misc. item pack a carry on me with first aid supplies on all of my hunts.
Moose Hunting is a low gear hunt. I always carry a windicator spray, my binos, my Montana Moose Rack Decoy, and a moose shoulder blade. I often have my birch bark horn for calling.
I use Birch bark to make my Moose calls while out in the field.
We are lucky to stay in cabins, but the cabins are rustic.
Clothing is essentially a make or break item. You need to keep the elements out, while staying warm, dry, and quiet. With archery moose hunting, quiet is essential. I will walk through the timber breaking branches, knocking over limbs, but I do not have clothing that will swish when rubbed along a willow. That is not a noise that moose tolerate. Also important to have a good set of hikers. And a good set of rubber boots. I have used Nokian for 15 years now as they have removable felt liners which are easy to dry.
Be quiet. Nothing ruins an approach of a Bull Moose quite like the vecro on a glove. For the boat, I will wear a Kuiu Kenai Bomber hat, and Kui Glomit glove for warmth.
Archery Gear is a personal brand preference. Bring a bow you can comfortably shoot out to 60 yards. Make sure your broadheads will cut. I prefer a 3 blade head as a broadhead with 2 blades can give little to no blood. Saw this happen in 2022.
Bring as big a gun as you can shoot comfortably. I bring a 300 WSM as backup.
