A New Mexico hunting guide is in the hospital after attempting to save his clients from a midnight attack. Walker Daugherty of Redwing Outfitters suffered a shot to the abdomen following a shootout against several gunmen who fired multiple rounds at his clients’ RV on the remote Circle Doug Ranch, west of Candelaria, TX.

His clients were still inside.

According to The Westerner, Daugherty rushed to help his clients after he investigated some suspicious noises only to find armed men near the RV. Shots rang out into the night and Daugherty, assisted by another guide, Michael Bryant, was able to fire back at the attackers. It’s possible that the attack was an attempted kidnapping as the remote hunting camp falls close to the Mexico border. However, the family says that they have been working with U.S. Border Patrol agents after multiple incidents of theft on the property and believe that the way the attack was stage meant that the attackers intended to actually kill them all, according to The Westerner.

While cell reception was bad, Daugherty’s and Bryant’s wives were able to contact authorities from inside the lodge after pulling Daugherty to safety. Fortunately, the client’s wife is a nurse and she was able to keep Daugherty’s bleeding under control. They had to wait an hour for a medivac helicopter to arrive and take him to El Paso; he is currently in critical condition.

The client, Edwin Roberts, was shot in the arm and is expected to fully recover.

The attackers have not yet been located.
