I've hunted chukar for around 15 years or so . If you know chukar they live in some demanding landscape and can be really hard to get to and then really hard to hit . I feed my kid chukar so I like to use steel shot so she's not eating lead pellets , plus steel is better for all the birds of prey and predators that eat chukar or any upland bird with steel shot in them .
That being said , when I started using steel shot the loads were kinda hard to find . Most steel loads I could find were waterfowl loads , and that is still the case today . Most waterfowl loads came in bigger sizes , the smallest being 4 shot . Now chukar hunting I do come across shells on the ground , and most are high brass size 4 . While these are great loads I feel they beat up the bird meat pretty good if you make a really good close shot . I wanted a smaller load size within a high brass shell . I came across the hevi shot number 5 shot first , which I really enjoyed for a couple years . They are still waterfowl loads but they had great knock down power and packed a punch even on birds flying away at Mach speed . When I found the hevi shot hevi teal in shot size 6 I thought to myself , these are the chukar loads I've always needed !! I quickly ordered half a case and couldn't wait to get out and try them !
I had a chukar hunt planned soon after my hevi teal 6 loads arrived , once in the filed I packed my vest pocket with a box of these loads . I started knocking down birds right away , noticing they don't kick as much as the 4 or 5 loads but they knock birds down just the same . Now I've hunted chukar a lot in my life and have never obtained a limit in one hunt , been close numerous times , but this particular day I did shoot my limit of chukar !!
Thanks to these loads I have confidence in the field and my birds come back to me with little damage done to the meat !
I would recommend these loads to anyone hunting chukar , Huns, grouse , pheasant, or even quail ! They are made in the USA , are better for the environment and best of all they get the job done on some of the toughest upland birds out there . Grab a box or two for your next upland trip and give them a try , you won't be disappointed!
