While I don't have permanent ringing in my ears, I will get an immediate numbing in my ears and headache if fire a gun without hearing protection. So, hunting without protection isn't even an option. But, any protection I use also has to allow me to hear (particularly when hunting with others - eg pheasants or waterfowl).
I've tried a few brands of muffs. They work well, and are relatively inexpensive. However, they can interfere with shouldering a gun, are uncomfortable while laying in a blind, and can be warm in early seasons. They also pick up extra noise from collars or brush scraping against the units. Annoying.
The Razor neck band is way better for comfort while interfering way less with shooting. The rubber buds are also comfortable in all weather. And, they do enhance sound while canceling gun shots and extra loud callers. My only complaint is that the wire cords tend to retract easily whenever the release button is bumped from clothing. If this happens, the buds might partially or completely dislodge from your ears as you shoulder and shoot your gun. Not good. I've 'fixed' this by pulling the buds out as far as they will go, and then tying a simple half hitch in each cord near the neck band - so they can't retract at all. Of course this probably isn't the best thing for a wire, but so far it works better than constantly tugging on them as I hunt.
Bottom line - if I had to upgrade from muffs, I'd pay a bit extra and get the wireless option.
