I've taken a few of these dehydrated meals on backpacking trips over the last few weeks. I usually take a mix of my own dehydrated food and some pre-packaged meals, like Mountain Home. I hadn't tried Peak before, so I wanted to give it a go and compare it to other pre-packaged dehydrated meals I've tried. They all came in 2-serving pouches, so some of the meals I shared with a friend (or split between two of my meals) and others I ate all as one meal on my own.
The good: I like the flavors - not too salty, and they taste different/unique. The coconut curry is my favorite so far. I also like the fact that a lot of them have so much meat/protein. Just one serving was fine for regular or low activity days. For my longer days (20 miles or lots of elevation gain and loss) I enjoyed eating a whole 2-serving packet for dinner. The hot breakfasts (scrambled egg and biscuits and gravy) were definitely big enough for two people, but I'd eat an entire one of the granola breakfasts by myself.
The bad: the meat never rehydrated all the way. Even when I boiled the water for an extra couple of minutes (sometimes I was at 6,000 and 7,000 feet), kept the food pouch inside my jacket to keep it extra insulated while it was rehydrating, and waited 15 minutes (the directions say 10 minutes). It didn't detract from the food experience too much, but I'd rather not eat crunchy meat. Also, you definitely want to break up the biscuits (in the biscuits and gravy) before adding the water - otherwise they definitely won't rehydrate.
Finally, the granola was bit of a rip off. It wasn't bad, but it was just granola and powdered milk - something I could mix together in about 30 seconds at home. It doesn't need to be packaged in one of those heat bags, because you just add cold water. A ziplock would work just fine.
I got this mixed pack because I wanted to try different flavors, and I'm glad that I did. In the future I'll probably order some of the dinners and hot breakfasts, but definitely skip the granola. And I'm still searching for the perfect dehydrated backpacking meal - one with plenty of calories, good flavors, and that fully rehydrates.
