I purchased the ALPS upland vest to do day hunts for chukar, in the remote backcountry of Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota and Kansas. After using other vests for several years, I was never satisfied with the amount of gear I could carry with me on a day hunt. In an average day quail or pheasant hunting near home, a person is fine with some shells for an afternoon hunt. But when you need to carry equipment for the entire day, plus basic emergency equipment most game vest come up far short. This vest however meets the needs of the western chukar hunter. I can carry a large bladder, a rain coat lunch, and basic survival equipment without trouble. With that said, it could even use more storage. I have added storage for quick access to things like a wallet and lighter on the front. Another issue I have come up on is that the front shell pocket it to small. When loaded with shells for a long day hunting they constantly fall out. I have probably lost dozens of shells over the years. It is a good vest but after 5 years I don't think it's a great vest.
