Headlamps are an important tool being an avid hunter, fisher, guide and outfitter. You sometimes forget about them until something goes wrong. Thankfully I haven't had many of those moments but have had a few and learned to always carry a backup. There are some brands I will stay away from and others that I have always gravitated towards because I felt they gave me the most reliability. Recently, I had noticed that the brightness on my particular headlamp wasn't as bright as some of my clients (brand of said lamp won't be mentioned) and I ended up trying one that had more lumens( of same brand) but found that the brightness quickly dropped after a few hikes in. It wasn't the end of the world but it ultimately lead me to try this Ledlenser MH8.
I was a little skeptical at first, I wasn't sure I was going to like the over the head strap because it was different from my others, I also wasn't sure how bulky it was going to be. Ultimately this MH8 proved to be more comfortable than all my other headlamps! I was shocked. The headstrap prevented the slip down that I had grown accustomed to with the headband style lamps. I can wear under or over my hats comfortably. Didn't notice any bulkiness.
I have used the MH8 now for two months. Put on almost 150 miles and a decent amount of those miles were in the dark hiking in to chase Colorado mountain turkeys. I really enjoyed this headlamp. It is really bright, has a rechargeable battery which seems to last a long time. I did pick up the ledlenser charging case which is pretty convenient but the batter has lasted so long I haven't needed to charge things yet! It is nice that you can switch colors and the width of the beam. Sometimes I'll see eyes in the woods looking at me while I'm hiking in and I want to see what it is, this does a much better job of spotlighting things in the dark than any of my other headlamps. I also like that you can use AA batteries as a backup. Always important to carry spares just in case your juice runs out. I find myself using this headlamp around the house too, tuning bows, fletching arrows, etc. I wasn't sure how I was going to like this headlamp but the more I use it the happier I am with it. Give it a shot if you're in the market for a headlamp you wont' be disappointed.
