In our 11 years as professional firearms instructors, we easily have bought somewhere around 50 lockable pistol cases. In just one year, we bought 11. Over the past 4 or 5 years, we EXCLUSIVELY bought SnapSafe XLs. Why? For the money (meaning great quality for the lowest price), SnapSafe XL trounces the competition in numerous ways. The 16 gauge steel and its finish is tough, the hinge is solid, and the combo lock / knob is METAL, NOT plastic. The cable is stout and it comes with several pieces of foam inside that you can keep or selectively take out. It holds most handguns. It can also be used for other items. Why choose a combo lock? You do NOT want to be fishing for a key in the dark or let alone a lost key. TIP: always keep the combo on the exact same numbers that are 1 digit away from the opening combo and MEMORIZE which one or ones move which way so you can do it even in complete darkness. Keep one or two in your car cabled to the seat or other anchor. Want it in the console, go right ahead. It fits every console we have tried SUV sized. You can even drill through the console bottom carefully and run the cable through. You can also mount it to a stud indoors. If you do this, do it upside down so the door falls open. You can use magnets to help keep the contents in place as necessary. YES, you can snap it open with a pry bar or throwing it on the concrete just right, but it does the job including storage requirements law at least where we are located. And, UNLIKE GunVault quick access electronic finger combo lockable cases, there are no batteries that fail you NOR a round key that can be beat with a drywall anchor! (No joke. Doubt us? You can open most cheap round key locks with a drywall anchor.) Anyway, we ONLY buy Hornady SnapSafe lockable pistol cases for ourselves and our students.
