The areas I hunt are fairly steep, covered by rock outcropping and areas of scree. After a couple seasons surviving on ibuprofen to make the next days hunt (sore ankles and lower leg tendons), I decided to try something different.
After some online research, my criteria for a boot were: At least 7" tall, stiff enough to climb rock, flexible enough for walking, goretex, full rubber rand, non-insulated and to the toe lacing.
Several Zamberlan models (and other brands) fit this criteria, but I decided on the Mountain Trek.
These boots are absolutely AMAZING, they did everything I needed, checked every box. No more sore ankles and tendons from side-hilling. No more sore feet from boots pinched and wedged walking through rocks.
The adjustable tongue works better than I imagined, allowing for heavier socks. I use wool of different variety and thickness. They were definitely warm as temp hit 80's, but not unbearably hot.
Break-In was about 5mi or less and I had no blisters or hot spots. I have about 30mi on them so far.
On uphill and sidehill, lacing is pretty forgiving and they're very comfortable. For downhill, I typically need to snug up the foot and/or ankle.
Pay close attention to your sizing, most of the Euro boots fit a little different than U.S. sizes AND they're narrow. Zamberlan offers an exchange to correct sizing, but it's on your dime. I didn't need it, but the service is worth the cost.
Overall, I'm very happy with these boots, I can hike/hunt farther with less fatigue and soreness. They perform better than I hoped for!
