I purchasede these boots in January of 2022 for a October of 2022 Montana back country hunt. I did not want to review the item until I tested it in the field so that is the reason for my delay.
When we went started into the mountains, it was relativly warm, but after listening to the weather reports I knew that was going to change quickly the same evening. It went from about 65 degrees on Thursday, to the 30's on Friday night.
The first snow came in as we horsebacked in. That night, it dumped about 12 inches of snow on us, and continued to snow for the remainder of the week. The temps ranged from single digits to the mid 20's so I can say I did test these boots out for both ruggedness (up and down mountains, over A LOT of deadfall, and through creeks time and time again), and warmth.
I wore only a pair of polyprophylene socks with them for most of the week and they held up spectacularly. Paired with King's Camo gaitors, my feet never got wet, and always stayed warm.
On my ride out of the mountains, there was a nasty snowstorm and I paired the boots with some smartwool socks. I knew I would not be moving much on the four hour horseback ride, so I heavied up a bit.
My feet were just starting to get a little chilled as we entered the parking lot, but all in all they performed well. They are comfortable, but a little heavy. I guess that is to be expected with 1000 grains of thinsulate and the heavy duty tread pattern on the base.
Everyone has their favorite kind of boot and I respect that. Other hunters in camp were sporting Kenetrek boots and thats great if you want that brand. I can honestly say that for the price I paid these boots were one of the best purchases I made for my trip.
If you plan on wearing heavy socks, I would suggest sizing up a bit, but for what I wore, they were true to size. Heavy socks may have made my feat a tad cramped. Thanks Rocky Boots and Guidefitter for excellent boots at and excellent price.
