The Comfortable Lightweight Socks were a little too thin on my late season archery mule deer hunt. Although the socks might be a little too thin for late season hunting, they would be ideal for early season hunting, especially in hot August and September weather.
The fit of the socks was exceptional. The sizing chart lead me to the perfect fit. The socks had good elastic support in all the right places, making them comfortable to wear for extended periods.
I grew up with a father who was a big hunter and he was of the mindset that you needed a thin polyester liner and a wool sock over that to prevent blisters on long hikes. Nowadays socks like Darn Tough are built for putting on miles, with a blend of materials that eliminates the need for a liner. The combination of 36% merino wool and 59% nylon allows hunters to wear these socks multiple days without washing and without any unpleasant odors.
The padding on the bottom of the socks was sufficient for several 10+ mile days of hunting mule deer in rough terrain. Despite having a surgically repaired Achilles tendon with a fat scar from my heel up my ankle, I had no issues with blisters, even after 20+ miles of hiking back to back days.
I have had several pairs of Darn Tough Socks over the years and has always found them to be durable and long-lasting. I have tried several other brands that I thought would be comparable, but they have all ended up with holes somewhere. On archery hunts like this one, I often end up taking off my shoes and putting in some stalking in my stocking feet. These did well in the pursuit, but again where a touch thin for cold mornings (some mornings were below zero, which I switched to their heavey weight sock)
I highly recommend these Comfortable Lightweight Socks for anyone looking for a well-made and durable wool hunting sock or everyday sock (they are a go to for every day wear for me too).
