Utah Late Season Rifle Elk

Hunting elk in the late season, up at high altitudes that sometimes surpass 10,000 feet, requires the best of gear. I've been fortunate to hunt all throughout the west. Mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, oryx, and moose. Guiding clients, friends and family, as well as my own hunts. My experience, successes and failures have given me perspective on what works, and what doesn't. How to make things simple, light, and just always work. Hopefully, this gear list will help you when you're looking at doing a late-season elk hunt when you want to stay dry and warm.

Optics

Optics are critical to any hunt. The better the glass, the more you are going to pick out the small differences between the hillside and those animals that looked invisible prior. There's even a larger difference in the early morning light, or minimal light late in the evening. Glass can make all the difference in seeing something or not seeing anything at all. If you want to have success, go with the best. It's a small price to pay to have success time and time again. For binos, I always go with Swarovski NL pure 12 x 42. On a tripod, no glass is better! There is a drastic difference between this glass and anything else. It is my go-to when I sit down and glass for long periods of time. For my bino harness, I absolutely love the badlands mag vinyl case. It seals out dust and makes it easy to open and close and grab my binos. And in case I forget to put them back in the case, they have heavy straps attached to them. So they won't fall on the ground and break. On a spotting scope, the best class out there is the Swarovski ATX. I use the 65 when I'm backpacking, and the 95 when I'm close to my truck. With 70x magnification, you're able to score and judge animals extremely well. On the rangefinder, I love the combo of binos and rangefinder. And for ballistic calculation, I haven't found anything that comes close to the ability of the HDB 3000.

For a tent, I would do a wall tent with a fireplace. But the best thing is just being an RV and then in an enclosed cab side-by-side with a heater.

Rifle Equipment

When it comes to choosing the right rifle, accuracy is paramount! The further you can shoot, and the more accurate you are, the greater your likelihood of killing you once in a lifetime trophy! You need to pair that rifle with optics to match. Getting a repeatable gun, with fantastic optics, are a game changer.
