Client waited years to kill a nice Utah Shiras Moose, and on opening day, 2 hours after the hunt started, he made a decision that has made me have the up most respect for this man. He could of killed a much larger bull than this, if we would of kept searching. But the decision came down to 2 things. Option A was to hold off and wait for something bigger, or Option B was to shoot this bull while his grandsons were watching from a short distance away. He chose the option that was more humbling and meaningful. He was able to take a beautiful Shiras, 38" wide, scored right around 134" total, but the most important thing was he chose memories over measurements and was able to have 3 of his grandsons, one of his sons and a son in law all witness the shot, and help with the quartering and pack out. His grandboys will never forget this hunt, and neither will he! This is one of a few reasons why I love guiding. Helping others create memories is what I set my goals to every guiding season!
Still one of my favorite Muley Hunts and Client/Friend!
This was a famous buck here on our Extended Unit in Utah. I've heard many stories from many people on how and where they "heard" this buck was killed. The irony is that he was killed 100 yards off a main road and not way back in like everyone thought haha. The year before this he was probably a solid 225-230" buck, but after 4 other hunters hit him on the archery hunt, the following year he grew all funky on his left side and ended up scoring right around 212". His was dubbed "Blackjack" because he had 21 scoreable points!
